Abstract A widely used earthquake resistant design of the structure is the equivalent lateral force procedure which is derived based on the assumption that dynamic behavior of the structure is governed by the fundamental vibration mode. In this procedure when the influence of higher vibration modes on the dynamic behavior is considered the design seismic load is corrected. But the corrected design seismic load can't reflect the higher vibration modes properly.In this study the defferences between the design seismic load for the bearing wall type structure based on the equivalent lateral force procedure and that based on the modal analysis using design spectrum are examined. From these examined differences an improved design seismic loas based on the equivalent lateral force procedure is proposed.
