Title |
Application of Modular Coordination for Increased Flexibility of Apartment Unit Design |
Abstract |
This paper presents a summary of a basic empirical stydy about apartment unit design and the application of modular coordination design to movable partition walls of flexible housing units. The study incorporates the followings;1. various fundamental design conditions under which to incorporate the application of modular coordination to flexible apartment design,2. modular dimensions and their systematic assembly, and the relationships of the assembled dimensions with the building structure system,3. suggestions of two different types of movable walls(Panel-type and Furniture-type walls)and different possible ways to apply these wall types to actual housing unit design,4. comparison analyses of these wall types in relation to floor plan grid-system, and 5. presentation of several examplary floor plans that incorporate the above-mentioned suggestions. The study results are summarized and presented for the improvement of the `flexibility' concept and its usability in housing design and residential use. By doing so, the study aims to contribute to the recent efforts that attempt to increase the flexibility of housing to repond to the changing lifecycles and also varying residential needs. |
