Abstract This paper is to present the basic data for improving the tensile strength of exterior tile in direct setting method. The experimental factors concerned mortar properties such as gradation of sand, mixing ratio, initial flow, admixture, mortar thickness, open time, which are supposed to affect the tensile strength of tile, are studied and discussed through the results of experiments. The tensile strength of mortar using 1:3(by weight) mixing ratio with 200mm of initial flow is highest and 0.1 to 0.2%(weight percent to cement) of M.C, 5 to 10% of EVA are proper content of admixture respectively. Also, sand meeting the requirements of ASTM C 144 with good gradation is recommended for improving the tensile strength of tile and provided 4kg/cm2 of tensile strength, the limit time of open time is 40minutes.
