Abstract Heated spaces & unheated spaces coexist in buildings. Nevertheless, most of the relative studies have been limited to heated spaces up to now, and a few studies on unheated spaces have been based on steady-state and qualitative analysis. The purpose of this study is to find out the thermal characteristics of unheated spaces quantitatively and to achieve the energy saving through proper planning of unheated spaces. The study was carried out by analyzing the effects of unheated spaces adjacent to heated spaces on building energy consumption and indoor thermal environment through computer simulation with transient heat analysis program developed in this study.
