Abstract Harmonic current is generated by non-linear loads and switching devices, flows into the power network system, and becomes one of the reasons behind nuisance tripping of Molded Case Circuit Breakers(MCCBs). An MCCB is typically used to provide over-current protection in low voltage power systems for electrical safety. The previous research has mainly focused on the influence of harmonic components on power systems and the operating characteristics of electrical devices. This paper describes the operating characteristics of a hydraulic magnetic type of MCCB and how it can affect harmonic current order and Total Harmonic Distortion(THD). The operating characteristics were measured as a function of 3, 5, 7, and 9 harmonic currents and a current THD of 10, 20, and 30%. A Finite Element Method(FEM) simulation was performed in order to verify the reliability of the experimental results. The MCCB tripping time was delayed due to an increased THD caused by harmonic current, which caused the peak time interval of harmonic current is lesser than the sinusoidal current.
