Abstract This paper proposes the design method of the electromagnetic structure to improving the driving characteristic of seat cooling fan BLDC motor for the automotive application. The proposed design method uses asymmetric air-gap structure for the phase shift of back-EMF. Although the driver IC has no function for the phase advance control, the proposed electromagnetic structure improves the driving characteristics of motor because of the phase advance control is realized by the phase shift of back-EMF. In this paper, asymmetric air-gap structure is optimized by using the design of experiment. The effectiveness of proposed electromagnetic structure is verified by performance test of initial and optimized model.
