Abstract A passive infrared (PIR) sensor module was developed to detect a human body at any location within a detection zone by using two PIR sensors and one reflector. In addition, a multi-sensor system was developed by using two PIR sensor modules and three microwave (M/W) sensors to detect human motion in a detection range of 15m and a detection angle of 180° without a shadow area. This multi-sensor system was then used to develop an algorithm to perform six different scenarios depending on a pedestrian's behavioral patterns and then appropriately dim an LED outdoor lighting fixture from 100% to 50% or 70%. This multi-sensor system and the algorithm were then applied to develop a 60W intelligent LED outdoor lighting fixture consisting of a heat pipe and stack-fin heat-sink. Experiments to evaluate performance and usability of the luminaire as a security luminaire were conducted. Experiments results showed that the dimming control of the lighting fixture successfully performed depending on the pedestrian behavioral patterns as designed. Furthermore, the fixture power consumption was reduced by 46.3%, and the luminous efficiency was improved by 9.0% by 50% dimming. Finally, the total weight of the fixture was lighter than that of the existing LED lighting fixtures by 12.0%, and the electrical energy consumption was also reduced by 41.3%.
