Abstract In self-pulsing transient spark discharge device, the discharge one is terminated before transition to arc state and generates atmospheric non-equilibrim plasma. The device can be applied to electrical equipment for hazardous gas treatment, sterillization and disinfection. This paper reports electrical and optical properties of self-pulsing transient spark. Three discharge modes were observed according to the discharge pulse frequency. Self-pulsing occurs only in a positive corona electrode configuration. Discharge current in unit pulse increases with the charging capacitance. It was found that higher frequency discharge has higher spectral intensity from excited N2 species, However, higher emission from excited O radical was found in lower frequency. Simulation results were compared with experimental results in Ar discharge. From the results, it was found that Current waveform and discharge configurations were qualitatively agreed. Also, ionization rate was maximum near discharge channel head. Calculated density distribution of Ar excited state was similar with the light intensity distribution of discharge channel.
