Abstract Insulated epoxy powder thin films with different thicknesses were deposited on Cu substrates by fluidized bed reactor. The magnitude of dielectric breakdown strength is generally decreased with increasing of thickness of insulated materials. In order to validate this assumption, the tendency of breakdown strength and thickness was examined using V = A ? d n equation. The dielectric breakdown strengths of the investigated epoxy coating were similar to the ceramic materials, however, the thickness dependent breakdown strength of epoxy was significantly different from that of ceramic materials when the water and sea-water degradations are carried out. Whereas the n value was about -0.5 in non-degradation, the n values were gradually decreased up to -1 with water and salt-water degradation. Hygrothermal aging at elevated temperatures tends to induce degradation in epoxy resins which is accounted for the effect of absorption and transport behavior of water and chloride ion.
