Abstract In this paper, a reclosing method considering the battery energy storage system (BESS) as an uninterruptible power supply is proposed. The proposed method detects the fault condition and keeps the power supply from BESS in good condition. After passing of fixed dead time, a synchronism checking is performed between the utility power and the power from the BESS and then the reclosing is performed when it is completed. To verify the proposed method, the whole distribution system including BESS and proposed method are modeled by the ElectroMagnetic Transients Program (EMTP)/ATPDraw, and the various simulations are performed according to the fault removal time. The simulation results show that the BESS can be operated as a UPS and successful reclosing is possible.
