Abstract Conventional field weakening control considering magnetic saturation in a 3-phase synchronous motor drive has not presented a clear calculation method for base speed. In this paper, a calculation method for the base speed considering the magnetic one is presented. The base speed is calculated using maximum torque control method. It is shown that the improved speed response is achieved by the proposed method being compared to that of the conventional method. In addition, it is shown that voltage limit curve with magnetic saturation does not become ellipse while the one without magnetic saturation becomes ellipse. The proposed method is verified by simulation results.
