Abstract In this study, the investigation on the road lighting in various aspects including analysis of current situation of day and night traffic accidents, measurement and analysis of average maintained luminance, overall luminance uniformity, longitudinal luminance uniformity, threshold increment, and suitability of the existing guidelines on Wonju nightscspe planning were performed. Among the night view factors of a city, the road lighting should express the identity appropriate for the city with the safety as the background. However, the road lighting that does not satisfy the road lighting criteria may threat the night traffic safety, and unstructured and ununiformed road lighting may give negative effects on the direction of urban image unified with the urban structure. When analyzing the safety of the main roads in Wonju, it was found that 13 out of 17 measured locations did not meet the baseline of the road. The number of the seriously injured and the dead from night traffic accidents was 2.1 times greater in Bukwonro, 4 times greater in Seowondaero, and 1.9 times greater in Gangbyun-ro compared to that from day traffic accidents. The longitudinal luminance uniformity in all these areas was not more than the baseline, indicating that the satisfaction of the lighting criteria is related to traffic accident to a certain degree. In terms of the suitability with the city night view guidelines, 7 out of 10 major roads deviated from the criteria of the color temperature, and especially in Bukwonro, Sicheong-ro, Namwonro, Chiak-ro, and Wonil-ro, the lightings of other color temperatures in the same road, which were analyzed to form a road view without uniformity.
