Abstract The power delivery by HVDC is still developing and expanding. HVDC consists of expensive equipments and that has the large roll in the power delivery. Therefore, many of the researchers study the variable protection of HVDC. This paper proposed the fault detection method to solve the problem of high impedance fault in HVDC. Fault detection uses Protection Zone and cable's temperature variation. Protection Zone participate in fault detection and cable's temperature variation contribute the accuracy. To verify the proposed method, PSCAD/EMTDC simulated fulfill. The results of simulation, high impedance fault was detected. And faults by variable distance was confirmed the accuracy of proposed method.
