Abstract In this study, a dual-mode light distribution system in the underground parking garages has been developed, and its performance for saving energy has been experimentally assessed. Two different optical systems were designed to implement this dual-mode light distribution system that two LED modules (10 W and 30 W) were applied in each lamp. The optical systems are set to turn on if moving objects are detected by a Passive Infrared(PIR) and a micro wave (M/W) sensors. And the 10 W module is only switched on if the moving object are not getting crossed. The power to each channel was supplied separately with one power source and our proposed system was controlled to enhance the system efficiency. The lamp was made by applying the dual-mode light distribution system. A demonstration test was conducted in an underground parking garage of company G to analyze the lighting environment and measure energy consumption. We obtained the experimental results that our proposed system had better energy saving performances 83.5% and 66.8% in the comparison to a fluorescent lamp and a typical LED lamp. In addition, we verified that the uniformity ratio of illuminance and the average illuminance has been another improved to 0.1lx, 35.7lx in our proposed system.
