Abstract Present traffic signal controllers are designed as fixed time intervals, even though there is no vehicle to travel, there is a waiting period to travel and traffic accidents at intersection are occurring steadily. Therefore, in this experiment, in order to reduce the waiting time of the vehicle and reduce the incidents at the intersection, simulation was performed to the control traffic signal using machine vision. To detect vehicle in the image, we used template matching algorithm of machine vision module. It is confirmed whether or not vehicle enters each zone in the image, traffic signal changed to next step if vehicle is not detected and the traffic signal is made to wait if there is a vehicle in the intersection area during the change of the signal to next step. In this paper, we were carried out simulation which controlled efficiently traffic signal to reduce the waiting time and congestion at intersection.
