Abstract In this paper, the flux linkage characteristics of the transformer type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) with additional secondary winding according to its winding direction were analyzed. To analyze the flux linkage, the peak fault current limiting tests of the SFCL were conducted with the design conditions of additive polarity and subtractive polarity windings. The time difference of the quench generation between two superconducting elements was analyzed to be affected by the winding direction of additional secondary winding. It was confirmed that the flux linkage in the case of additive polarity winding moved more into saturation area of iron core during the fault period than the case of subtractive polarity winding.
