Abstract Due to the reduction in the use of SF6 gas, a greenhouse gas, electric power facilities using Dry-air as an eco-friendly insulating material are being operated. However, since the dielectric strength of Dry-air is significantly lower than that of the SF6 gas, solid insulation is used to supplement the insulation of power facilities. In a facility to which solid insulation is applied, a breakage of creepage insulation can lead to an electric power accident, so countermeasures are required. Therefore, in this paper, the creepage insulation breakdown characteristics of solid insulators using Dry-air were checked, and the radiated electromagnetic waves according to the creepage insulation breakdown progress were measured to design an insulation diagnostic sensor using radiated electromagnetic waves. The designed sensor has a return loss of -10dB or more in the UHF band(0.3∼1.5GHz), and is designed with a circular patch strip cylinder structure to measure ease of manufacture, radiation characteristics, cross-polarized radiation, and broadband. Through a diagnostic sensor using such a sensor, it will be possible to apply it in the diagnosis of electrical equipment to which solid insulation is applied.
