Abstract |
This paper proposes the installation of arc-fault circuit interrupters to prevent the electric fires caused by the electric arc. In spite of the positive effects on the installation of arc-fault circuit interrupters, the interrupters have not been required as mandatory apparatus because of the lack of standards for their installation, test, validation, and institutions. To propose the mandatory installation of the apparatus, this paper deals with the regulations for the installation and requirements of the arc-fault circuit interrupter applied in different countries, including the United States, Canada, the European Union, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Asian countries. The necessity of the installation of the arc-fault circuit interrupter is proposed based on domestic regulations. The direction of the enactment and revision of the regulations are also reviewed. As a result, the definition of the arc-fault circuit interrupter, establishment of testing and certification standards, and obligation of the installation of the arc-fault circuit interrupters are suggested for preventing electric fires. |
