Abstract In this study, we investigated the creepage discharge characteristics of three solid insulators under high vacuum conditions, as well as the effects of surface roughness on these characteristics. Such high vacuum conditions are typically applied in medical apparatuses, such as superconducting accelerators operating at cryogenic temperatures. Solid insulators play an essential role in the design of these systems. The three solid insulators selected for this study were MC Nylon (mono cast Nylon), GFRP (glass fiber reinforced plastic), and Bakelite. A sheet of each insulator was placed between a sphere-to-sphere electrode system to perform creepage discharge experiments. The experiments were initially conducted with the normal surface roughness of the insulators, followed by artificially increasing the surface roughness using sandpaper and repeating the experiments under the same conditions. The experimental results demonstrated that the creepage discharge characteristics varied among the three solid insulators depending on their surface roughness. This study successfully identified the creepage discharge characteristics of solid insulators with different surface roughness levels under high vacuum conditions, which can be potentially applied in the development of medical superconducting apparatuses.
