Abstract |
The purpose of this study is to investigate the historical living conditions of the old city of Beijing and analyze the existing planning and
protection policies for this area. The study also aims to explore how future policies for the old town can be updated and culturally
preserved. Beijing has a long history of more than 3,000 years. Since the Yuan Dynasty, Hutongs have developed with the succession of
dynasties and have become valuable heritage sites that carry Beijing's historical and cultural connotations. Additionally, Hutongs represent the
most important form of housing in Beijing's Old Town. Since 1990, Beijing has officially introduced corresponding historical and cultural
protection measures and has made different policy plans according to the various functional types of alleyways. This paper discusses the
changes that have occurred since several representative alleys were planned and reformed, as well as the impact on people's lives, the
surrounding environment, and historical buildings. Through the results of a questionnaire survey, this paper examines how Hutongs can adapt
to the needs of the public, implement targeted changes, and explore new directions for cultural protection. |
