Abstract |
Modern society is marked by extreme fragmentation and pluralism. The theory of architectural autonomy emerged as a way to find the
essence of architecture, focusing on its intrinsic qualities. Valerio Olgiati and Christian Kerez, prominent figures in the contemporary tradition
of architectural autonomy, emphasize physical elements and aim to avoid external references. They organize architectural components through
an autonomous approach, using contradictions that arise to create distinctive spatial experiences. The two architects differ in their methods:
Olgiati uses design to provoke reasoning, while Kerez begins with questions and curiosity. Olgiati deconstructs structural elements to form
unique arrangements, whereas Kerez seeks to depart from traditional systems through endless structural variations. Additionally, Olgiati
emphasizes the "oneness" of a building by using a single material, typically concrete, based on his rules, while Kerez strives to make
minimal materials appear unified, allowing materials and spaces to exist separately and independently. Their pursuit of architecture’s essence
highlights its independent nature, expressed in form and intended to evoke existential experiences. This study aims to further the discussion
on architecture that transcends historical and cultural contexts. |
