Abstract This study investigates the characteristics of series arcs during the breaking operation of DC switch on capacitive loads. Critical capacitance of capacitive loads at which series arc does not occur is analyzed through experiments of DC series arc on capacitive loads. This study presents the estimated critical capacitance of capacitive loads in relation to load power levels and supply voltages in low-voltage dc systems.
