Abstract This paper proposes an Operating Number Control method to reduce THD in a multi-inverter sonar sensor drive system. The power amplifier for FFR sensor is driven by 4 Voltage Source Inverter(VSI) and LC filters. The LC filters are impedance matched to the FFR sensor. To meet voltage requirement for the FFR sensor, the output voltage of 4 VSIs is series connected. The input voltage of sensor is controlled by Modulation Index (MI) of the inverters. Although the output voltage of the inverter is linear to the MI, the Total Harmonic Destruction(THD) is greater for lower MI. The THD reduction method using the Operating Number Control is proposed to reduce THD at lower MI region. At low MI region, few inverters operate at high MI and turn off the rest to maintain lower THD. Simulation and experiments show that the Operating Number Control reduces THD at lower MI region while maintaining output voltage.
