Abstract This paper proposes a carrier phase shift method for reducing switching torque ripple in multi-winding PMSMs. Although BLDCM has been widely used in various fields in recent years, it has practical problems such as common-mode current and vibration, which are caused by torque ripple and common-mode voltage. Both problems can be resolved if the motor structures are redesigned or the control methods are improved. The conventional approach has focused solely on the 90° phase shift control method. By contrast, the proposed method involves a 45° phase shift control and introduces a new motor design to reduce torque ripple. The effectiveness of the proposed method for reducing switching torque ripple is verified by comparing the performance of the two types of control methods through simulations and experiments.
