Abstract Current source converters have no shoot-through problem and a long life span due to the use of an inductor as a DC link element. However, the arm-open issue is crucial in the current source converter. If no path for the DC link inductor is available, then a huge voltage spike is induced and semiconductor devices are damaged. Therefore, overlap time is required to prevent the arm-open issue, but the overlap time distorts input and output waveforms. In this paper, space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) is proposed. The proposed scheme does not require the overlap time for a three-phase current source rectifier/inverter with the help of a freewheeling path for the DC link inductor by slightly modifying the conventional SVPWM. Therefore, the quality of waveforms can be improved. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme is verified through theoretical analysis and experiment.
