Abstract This paper proposes a State of Power (SOP) estimation algorithm for industrial Energy Storage System (ESS) that considers short- and long-term load characteristics. The power requirements of the industrial site are categorized into short-term peak power load and long-term constant power load by analyzing the constant power profile of the industrial ESS. An appropriate SOP estimation algorithm is designed for each load type. The proposed algorithm is based on a battery equivalent circuit model and incorporates two estimation methods that respond to different load characteristics. The performance of the proposed algorithm is validated using load requirement data, and its validity is further assessed through an ESS composed of retired batteries that have been operated over an extended period at an industrial site. The proposed SOP estimation algorithm can be used to predict available power based on the load requirements of the industrial site, thereby maximizing the efficiency of ESS operation.
