Abstract This paper proposes a harmonic current feed-forward compensation technique based on spatial harmonics to reduce torque ripple in interior permanent magnet synchronous motors operating in the low-speed region. The compensation current is applied by modifying the current commands within the dq-axis current controller using a modulated model predictive control approach. The proposed compensation targets the 6th and 12th harmonic currents in the dq-axis synchronous reference frame, with coefficients determined by considering spatial harmonics. Experimental results demonstrated a 40.12% reduction in torque ripple compared to conventional methods, validating the effectiveness of the proposed control technique.
