Abstract This study proposes hierarchical finite-control-set model predictive control (FCS-MPC) with a digital observer for maximum power point tracking (MPPT) in a photovoltaic (PV) boost converter. The proposed method controls the power and PV current step by step using their respective cost functions. Given that the proposed method is based on FCS-MPC, it does not require a modulator and PI controller, thereby eliminating the need for gain tuning. In addition, the PV current reference is compensated under rapid changes by detecting variations in solar irradiance, ensuring that the power?voltage characteristic curve is not violated and that MPPT control remains effective. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified through a 6 kW simulation and a 1.3 kW experiment.
