Abstract This study analyzes the effect of the rate of rise of voltage (RRV) on the beam power output characteristics of an S-band magnetron, focusing on the mode stability during the transition at the Hartree voltage. The RRV is primarily influenced by the internal impedance of the pulsed power modulator (PPM) and the parasitic components of the high-voltage connecting cable. Considering the fixed equivalent capacitance of the shielded cable as a constraint, this study utilizes the series inductance within the PPM as a key design parameter to optimize the RRV. A tens-of-kilovolts-class PPM and an S-band magnetron are modeled using PSpice to analyze the correlation between these parameters and the beam power output. Simulation and experimental results demonstrate that an optimized RRV of 85 kV/μs effectively suppresses moding and mode-skipping phenomena while minimizing overshoot in the initial oscillation stage. The proposed design methodology confirms that a stable 3 MW beam power output can be achieved, providing a robust guideline for high-voltage pulsed-power system design.
